The $3,500 Apple Vision Pro XR Headset will Combine Both Virtual and Augmented Reality

Revealed during the highly anticipated Worldwide Developer Conference 2023, the Apple Vision Pro XR headset is set to revolutionize the realm of virtual reality. Boasting unparalleled integration with Apple devices and accompanied by a staggering price of $3,500, the adoption rate of this inaugural headset remains uncertain.

Incorporating a blend of virtual and augmented reality capabilities, the Vision Pro harnesses the power of mixed-reality technology. To bring this innovative headset to life, Apple’s extensive research and development efforts resulted in the patenting of an impressive “5,000” technological ideas, which collectively contribute to the creation of the Vision Pro’s groundbreaking features and functionalities.

According to Tim Cook, the Vision Pro represents a new breed of computing that enhances reality by seamlessly merging the physical and digital realms. Liberated from the constraints of traditional displays, users are granted an expansive canvas as their surroundings transform into an infinite realm.

Equipped with a cutting-edge 3D interface, the Vision Pro introduces elements that possess a remarkable “sense of physicality.” These elements possess dimensions, dynamically respond to light, and even cast shadows, aiding users in comprehending scale and distance. Thanks to the integrated inward eye-tracking cameras, apps will react accordingly when gazed upon.

Diverging from the conventional VR headsets, the Vision Pro noticeably lacks traditional controllers. Instead, users can effortlessly navigate through apps by directing their gaze, tapping their fingers to make selections, employing wrist movements for scrolling, or utilizing voice commands for dictation. The efficacy of a fully motion-controlled headset, devoid of the familiar tactile feedback of buttons and joysticks, remains to be seen.

The Vision Pro grants the ability to position apps within the physical space of one’s office or living room. While many apps will retain a conventional 2D display, they will also possess immersive 3D elements that extend beyond the confines of the screen.

When it comes to the display of the Vision Pro, Apple has managed to cram an impressive “23 million pixels” into two micro-OLED displays, each comparable in size to a postage stamp. These displays are augmented by catadioptric lenses, which, similar to Meta’s pancake lenses, achieve magnification while maintaining a lighter design compared to previous VR lenses.

To address the issue of motion sickness, the headset will employ a custom-designed “R1” silicon chip, boasting a mere 12ms latency delay. Apple assures that this chip will effectively prevent feelings of nausea. With the capability to process input from 12 cameras, five sensors, and six microphones in real-time, this chip enables accurate hand tracking for controls and precise voice capture for teleconferencing.

Spatial audio will be a notable feature of the Vision Pro, incorporating two audio drivers embedded within the “audio pods” positioned near the user’s ears.

The Apple Vision Pro will be available “early next year.”
