Netflix will Invest Heavily in Mobile Gaming in 2023

This year, Netflix is intensifying its efforts to expand into mobile gaming by announcing its intention to launch 40 new titles in the next few months.

Additionally, on Monday, the streaming platform revealed that they are currently working on 70 additional mobile games. One of the highly anticipated titles is the artistic puzzle game, Monument Valley 1 and 2, which is set to be released on the service in 2024. These two indie games, developed by the British studio UsTwo, have already sold 26 million copies as of 2016 and received several accolades, including two Baftas and the D.I.C.E. Spirit Award.

Furthermore, Netflix hinted that they are collaborating with Super Evil Megacorp, the developer responsible for creating Vainglory and Catalyst Black, to produce a unique game that is tied to an upcoming Netflix release. This exclusive game will only be available on the streaming service.

Leanne Loombe, Netflix’s VP of external games, told reporters during a briefing, “Just like we did with the streaming side of Netflix, we are building this curated portfolio with extremely talented external developers because we want to achieve that variety and that diversity within the portfolio of games.”

Having entered the mobile gaming market in 2021, Netflix now has 55 games available on iOS and Android, including Kentucky Route Zero, Tomb Raider Reloaded, and TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge. With the purchase of Night School Studio in 2021, the business acquired its first game development studio. Shortly after, it added the critically praised thriller Oxenfree to its library of streaming titles.

On the other hand, according to Bloomberg, Netflix’s advertising-supported service in the US had about 1 million active monthly users after its second month. The user base grew by more than 500% in the first month and another 50% in the next month.
