Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League Will be a Live-Service Game. Will it Flop?

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will be a live-service game. This was confirmed by Sony in the latest State of Play on February 23, 2023. At the same event, Sony also revealed the gameplay for the latest game developed by Rocksteady Studios.

From the gameplay trailer, it appears that Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will be an open-world action shooter. You can view the gameplay trailer below.

In this game, you can play as Deadshot, Harley Quinn, King Shark, and Captain Boomerang. This group of supervillains will be tasked with stopping Brainiac and his plan to invade Metropolis. Interestingly, the members of the Justice League are possessed by the enemy, so you will fight the superheroes just as the game’s title suggests.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, confirmed to be set in the “Arkhamverse”, will be released on May 26 for PS5, Windows, and Xbox Series X|S. It has also been confirmed that the game will be a live-service game, allowing you to play solo or co-op with friends. Unfortunately, an internet connection will still be required even when playing solo.

For some, the live-service model and always-online requirement may be deal-breakers. Moreover, when discussing live-service superhero games, people may refer to the failed Marvel’s Avengers (published in August 2020 by Square Enix), which will be shut down by the end of September 2023. Speaking of always-online games, even when played solo, the game that comes to mind is Outriders (also published by Square Enix). Let’s just say that Outriders is not the most popular nor well-received game from the 3rd-person-shooter or looter shooter genre.

However, if we look deeper, it’s not just about the always-online requirement or live-service model. Those live-service and always-online games failed because of their gameplay. I have tried the Outriders demo, and the movement and shooting feel clunky. Let’s not even get started on Marvel’s Avengers’ gameplay, which would take too long to discuss in this article.

On the other hand, there are Borderlands and Monster Hunter series, which are semi live-service games (without always-online requirements). For me, these games offer satisfying gameplay, and they still have loyal communities and players years after their release dates.

So, I would say the jury is still out regarding Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, because we cannot judge the gameplay from the trailer alone. Hopefully, Rocksteady Studios can deliver the same quality as its Arkham trilogy games.
