Bethesda announces a rogue-lite top-down mobile shooter called Mighty Doom. Alpha Dog, a Canadian studio owned by Zenimax, developed this Doom spin-off mobile game.

“Run and gun your way through hordes of adorably violent demons, iconic levels, and challenging bosses as you level up, unlock powerful skills, and upgrade gear and weapons.” Said Bethesda.

This game will be released on 21 March 2023 on iOS and Android.

If I take a look at the official trailer above, I would guess that the game is pretty similar to Archero. Although in Archero, you can’t shoot while moving – you have to stand still to attack. In the trailer, it seems you can shoot while moving. However, with the rogue-lite element mentioned, I would guess that your skills will be randomized on each run – similar to Archero. It also has a portrait orientation too. Plus, I can also see the similarity with the equipment screen shown in the trailer.

Nevertheless, it’s always interesting to see mobile game spin-offs. Because, the adaptations don’t always bring a good payoff. Sure, Fallout Shelter, another spin-off published by Bethesda on mobile devices, is not so bad but I wouldn’t say it’s the best game on mobile.

I’m pretty sure not many people know this but there was a Battleborn spin-off, called Battleborn Tap. It’s terrible and no longer on Google Play. Indeed, the Battleborn franchise itself failed but there is also a failed case of Apex Legends Mobile. Although Apex Legends is popular on PC and consoles, EA has cancelled the mobile version of the game.

“Following a strong start, the content pipeline for Apex Legends Mobile has begun to fall short of that bar for quality, quantity, and cadence. It is for this reason, after months of working with our development partner, that we have made the mutual decision to sunset our mobile game.” Said Respawn in the official statement.

In contrast, I would say that PUBG Mobile is more successful than its PC or console version. On the other hand, there is the Call of Duty franchise with its Call of Duty Mobile. Whether on PC, consoles, or mobile, the Call of Duty franchise holds strong. So, there is no guarantee that the mobile spin-off will bring positive outcomes.

Personally, I’m curious to see this Doom spin-off and can’t wait to try it. Speaking of mobile game spin-offs, Street Fighter Duel also just announced its announced date, February 28th.
