Sony is Reportedly Interested in Acquiring Take-Two Interactive

Take it with a grain of salt but Sony is rumoured to have an interest in acquiring Take-Two Interactive. The rumour started from a Twitter user, Rythian, who says: ‘Have it on extremely good word that if Microsoft acquires Activision Blizzard, Sony is going after Take-Two Interactive to counter it. 3 of my trusted and almost always correct sources confirmed that to me.”

Sony has a history of speaking out against big mergers in the gaming sector, but the threat presented by Microsoft’s purchase of Activision Blizzard might be too great for Sony to ignore, according to Benzinga. Previously, Sony has acquired Bungie (2022), Crunchyroll (2021), and Evolution Championship Series (Evo, 2021) to name a few.

Just in case you didn’t know, Take-Two Interactive is also a giant gaming company. Under Take-Two Interactive, there are 2K (known for Borderlands, BioShock, Civilization, Mafia, NBA 2K, WWE 2K, and X-COM series), Rockstar Games (known for GTA, Bully, Max Payne, Manhunt, and Read Dead series), and Zynga (FarmVille).

Compared to the $68.7 billion value that Microsoft gave for Activision Blizzard, Take-Two is valued at $19.62 billion.

If it’s true and Sony would acquire Take-Two, it could be interesting to see what Sony could do with it. Zynga is one of the biggest mobile game companies. So, Sony could do more penetration in the mobile market. For 2K, it’s a bit worrying for PC gamers since Sony could push the company to delay the release of its game on PC – similar to what Sony has been doing with its PlayStation games on PC. However, for Rockstar, it wouldn’t change that much since Rockstar has been putting the PC platform in the backseat for its game.
